Missing
By J.R. Logan.
The merchant bell rang and Emily White looked up from the inventory paperwork seeing Malcolm Jones and Hank Magnum walk in to the shop. They had stern looks, it was a business visit. She smiled anyway, “Welcome to White and Doorchester’s Magic Shop. How can I help you?”
Magnum came up to the counter and set two photographs in front of Emily. Both were of Twenty-something black men, both clean cut, dressed in suits. Emily closed her eyes. “What did they do?”
They’re missing,” Magnum said “How do you know Gregory Micheals and Jarome Dhall?”
Emily picked up the photos looking at both. It had been a long time. “We grew up together in the old neighborhood. They’re vampires,” Emily said.
“That’s what I thought,” Magnum said.
Malcolm raised a finger, “But Gregory’s mother is human.”
“It can skip generations when there’s humans in the family,” Emily said.
“That’s also what I thought,” Magnum said.
Malcolm kind of looked embarrassed for a moment. “I didn’t know there were black vampires.” He felt as if he should have known. It hit him like a personal failing.
“Why wouldn’t there be black vampires?” Emily asked.
“I never met any.”
“You have. You just didn’t know it. They say the Sons of Africa are blessed by the Sun,” Emily said. “They don’t burn. The darker skin, the less vampires burns. I blister under a heat lamp. Don’t feel to bad there are only three black vampire families in Toledo. Micheals, Dhall and Scarlet.”
Magnum tapped the pictures, “Any idea if they’re in trouble?”
“Gregory’s dad is a dentist. I don’t know what Jamal’s parents do did but they’re all professional middle class. At least when we were kids. Theses two are boring,”
Magnum scratched his chin and turned a picture around. “Mrs. Micheals reported them missing, nobody at their jobs seems to know anything. I thought with the Tomroy thing going on; they’d have left town.”
“Talk to America Scarlet, she’s the matriarch of the third family maybe they went down to Atlanta. There is a huge vampire community down there it’s mostly Caribbean blacks and creole,” Emily said.
Magnum and Malcolm said their goodbyes and returned to patrol. Emily couldn’t focus on the paperwork. She hoped those two didn’t go down to Atlanta. The trouble down South should stay there. The taro deck shuffled to get her mind off of things. Three cards were dealt, The Fool, Death and The Devil. Emily swiped the cards up and dropped the deck in the counter drawer.
